La Liga champions Barcelona are reportedly considering abandoning the move for 59-year-old former treble-winning coach Hansi Flick.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Hansi Flick has been the subject of interest from Barcelona in recent months. The reigning La Liga champions are in the market for a manager due to Xavi Hernandez’s impending departure. But they are moving away from pursuing the 59-year-old former treble-winning coach.

Hansi Flick is one of the most highly-rated managers in the world. While his stint with the German national side did not work out as well as he would have envisioned, his stock remains high. That is because of his exploits with Bayern Munich during his two-year spell at the Allianz Arena.

The German tactician was an unknown quantity when Bayern Munich replaced Niko Kovac with him in 2019. But he made an immediate impact at the Allianz Arena, delivering the treble in the 2019/20 season. While Die Roten won the Bundesliga title in the 2020/21 campaign, the 59-year-old parted ways with the club in 2021.

So, after displaying the calibre of winning every trophy in a season, it is hardly surprising that several high-profile clubs are keen on landing Flick this summer. Recent reports have linked him with Liverpool and Chelsea. But he has also been a target for Barcelona heading into the summer.

Barcelona’s interest in Hansi Flick comes in the wake of Xavi Hernandez’s announcement of his impending departure. The former Spanish international has not lasted long at the Catalan club after growing frustrated due to backroom issues. And his decision to leave Barcelona has forced the Blaugrana into the market for a manager.

Several candidates, Julian Nagelsmann, have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar. But Flick is also a viable target. However, the reigning La Liga champions are cooling their interest in the 59-year-old treble-winning coach as they prefer that their next manager speak Spanish.

Flick has been keen on joining Barcelona amid interest from clubs like Bayern Munich. But with the Catalan giants cooling their interest in him, it will be interesting to see where he lands this summer if he resumes his managerial career.
