Hansi Flick has made his decision on his next club, with the 58-year-old in-demand German manager a target for Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
According to Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside, Hansi Flick has his preference amid emerging interest in his services. Barcelona and Bayern Munich are interested in the former Germany head coach. And the 58-year-old would prefer to join the Blaugrana instead of returning to his former club ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Hansi Flick has endured a topsy-turvy ride during his short managerial career thus far. A midfielder during his time as a footballer, he represented Bayern Munich and FC Koln, among others. Meanwhile, he entered the coaching sphere as the player-manager of Victoria Bammental in 1996.
The German tactician managed Hoffenheim for half a decade, but his next three jobs came as an assistant manager at Red Bull Salzburg, Germany, and Bayern Munich. But Niko Kovac’s departure from the Allianz Arena in 2019 turned Flick’s fortunes around, as he became Die Roten’s head coach.
Bayern Munich enjoyed incredible success with Flick in charge of the club between 2019 and 2021. The Bavarian giants won the treble in the 2019/20 season, while four other trophies followed before he departed from the Allianz Arena in 2021. The German national team job came calling in 2021, but he struggled to impose himself on the international stage.
Hansi Flick has been a free agent since last year, and his status has alerted several high-profile clubs, including Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Barcelona will lose Xavi Hernandez when the 2023/24 season ends, with the former Spanish international announcing his resignation last month.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich announced Thomas Tuchel’s impending departure this week, with the German tactician’s time at the Allianz Arena ending in May. So, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are scouring the market for top-class managers, with Flick emerging as a target for both clubs. But Bayern might face a tall order re-signing the 58-year-old, who prefers the Barcelona job.
Recent reports had already claimed that the Barcelona job appeals to Flick. The German manager has reportedly started learning Spanish and will hope to seal the deal with the Blaugrana in the coming weeks. But it will be interesting to see if Bayern Munich can turn his head.
