Chelsea are not planning on dismissing Mauricio Pochettino just yet, as the Argentine could have until the end of the campaign.
According to The Sun, Mauricio Pochettino will not be sacked from Chelsea for the time being. The Argentine could have until the end of the season to improve the club’s results, although rumours of an imminent exit could be squashed for now.
Chelsea fans are baffled by the state of their club on the pitch, as the team are not able to stitch together a string of results on a consistent basis. They have lost the last two games with a 4-1 scoreline, with the most recent hammering coming through the hands of Wolves.
In the aftermath of the Wolves defeat, rumours of a possible Mauricio Pochettino sacking emerged. Jose Mourinho’s name was sung at Stamford Bridge at the weekend, which may have felt absurd in some quarters but made sense for plenty of others.
The Portuguese is being touted as a potential replacement for the Argentine, and if that happens, Mourinho will take on his third spell at the club. However, for now, the rumours of Pochettino’s imminent sacking have been put under the rug, as Chelsea could stick with the Argentine until the end of the campaign.
Some reports were stating that Chelsea would have to pay out a hefty compensation package to Pochettino in the event of his sacking. In that scenario, the club could breach FFP rules, which could then lead to further complications.
More reports stated they had already thought of Xabi Alonso as a potential replacement for Pochettino, although the Argentine will be given a few more months to stake his claim. Chelsea are currently struggling for relevance, although the report states the Argentine must achieve European qualification at all costs.
If that happens, Pochettino might have a future at Stamford Bridge before the current season, as Chelsea could give the Argentine another chance to prove himself. For now, he will stay in the dugout, hoping to revive their disastrous season and make it into something.
Chelsea are firmly in contention for the FA Cup as Pochettino prepares to take on Aston Villa in their fourth-round replay. Additionally, they are also in the League Cup Final, where they will face Liverpool at the end of February, as the Blues do have a good shot at winning a trophy this term.
