Liverpool have identified Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso as their preferred choice to succeed Jurgen Klopp at the club.

According to a report by HITC, Xabi Alonso is Liverpool’s preferred choice to take over from Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season. The Spanish manager has been doing wonders for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany and his team’s performances suggest he has what it takes to manage a big club with huge expectations.

Alonso had a decorated career as a player, he featured for some of the best clubs in the world. The Leverkusen boss was a part of the Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich team back in the day. The 42-year-old has had an exceptional start to his managerial career.

The former Bayer Munich midfielder has transformed Leverkusen into a winning team. They haven’t lost a single game in the league since the start of the 2023/24 season and are currently leading the race for the Bundesliga title.

His impressive rise and his team’s exceptional performance have resulted in him attracting the interest of his former clubs. While Bayer Munich and Real Madrid have both been linked with the former Spain international, Liverpool have made him their priority target.

Jurgen Klopp has decided to part ways with the Merseyside club in the summer. He has transformed this club and has helped them win the Premier League as well as the Champions League. But, the German boss feels he can’t do it anymore. As a result, he wants to take a break from football.

With Klopp deciding to cut short his stay and part ways a year before his deal ends, Liverpool have started working on his replacement. The Reds need to ensure they bring in someone who understands the kind of football they want to play and has a similar style.

Roberto De Zerbi and Xabi Alonso are the top two candidates for the role. Both managers love to play an attacking brand of football, they are ideal candidates. But, Xabi Alonso is Liverpool’s preferred choice because of the fact that he has played for them and has an understanding of the culture. He has done it as a player and when he walks into the dressing room he will command respect.
