Manchester United are reportedly looking to appoint Paul Mitchell as their director of football, with John Murtough in trouble.

A report from iNews has claimed that incoming minority owner Sir Jim Radcliffe wants to appoint Paul Mitchell as the director of football at Manchester United and replace John Murtough.

Mitchell is well respected in European football, and he has helped sign some quality players for reasonable prices over the years. On the other hand, Manchester United’s transfer business has been questionable since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Red Devils could certainly use his expertise in the transfer market to unearth gems and sign players for reasonable prices. They have recently spent in excess of £150 million on players like Jadon Sancho and Antony.

Both players have been underwhelming so far and the Red Devils have barely had any return on their investment. They need to spend money on better players if they want to compete with clubs like Manchester City on a regular basis.

Manchester United have not been able to compete for major trophies for a decade now. So, it is hardly surprising that they could look towards Paul Mitchell for the sporting director post. But it remains to be seen whether the former Tottenham transfer guru can transform things at Old Trafford.

There is no doubt that Erik ten Hag has done an impressive job with his coaching last season. But he needs more help in the transfer market. Manchester United clearly need to spend their resources better to improve the squad. They have spent more money than most English clubs in the last few years but have not been able to put together a formidable squad capable of challenging at the highest level consistently.

Paul Mitchell helped sign top-class players like Dele Alli and Sadio Mane in the past at his former clubs. He could land talented young prospects at Old Trafford as well. He has the experience of working at top European clubs like RB Leipzig and AS Monaco. He has previously worked in the Premier League with Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur as well.

Mitchell is believed to be an ally of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils can get the deal done soon. Ratcliffe is expected to acquire a 25% minority stake in the Premier League club with a view to a complete takeover in the near future.
