Ajax are considering appointing Manchester United assistant coach Mitchell van der Gaag as their new manager to replace Maurice Steijn.
According to Daily Mirror, Manchester United could lose one of their key coaching staff members Mitchell van der Gaag as Ajax plots a move. The Eredivisie side could disperse off with Maurice Steijn and replace him with Erik ten Hag’s assistant.
A lot has gone wrong over at Ajax since the departure of Erik ten Hag. Not only did they lose out on playing in the UEFA Champions League after their performances last season, but they have thoroughly struggled for relevance this term.
Ajax are currently 16th on the Eredivisie table after winning once in their six games this season. The disappointing performances have called for the club board to review manager Maurice Steijn’s position as they could ponder sacking the beleaguered tactician.
Former Manchester United and Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal, now in an advisory role with Ajax, has reportedly recommended a name. He would like the club to appoint Mitchell van der Gaag as their new manager if they sack Steijn.
Van der Gaag has been a key member of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff and joined Manchester United along with the 53-year-old. Van Gaal regards the Red Devils’ key coaching staff member relatively highly and would want Ajax to explore a move.
While Manchester United brace themselves for a raid from Ajax, any move will only increase the pressure on ten Hag. The Red Devils boss relies heavily on his staff for ideas, and van der Gaag has stuck around for a long time with the 53-year-old.
Losing him at this stage of the season will be a bitter blow for ten Hag’s plans. The Dutchman is already under pressure. But Manchester United have faith in his ability. If van der Gaag leaves, the 53-year-old will have to scour for another key coaching staff member.
Following a terrible start to their season, there were reports that Manchester United were looking for replacement options. However, some good results in the last few games have helped ten Hag sustain the pressure and, for now, will continue to help revive the team and their campaign.
As for Ajax, they know van der Gaag well from his days at the club. Hence, his appointment would not come as a surprise, as they might look at a replacement who knows the team inside out.
