Xabi Alonso has an agreement to join Liverpool or Real Madrid

Xabi Alonso has a clause in his contract that would allow him to join either Liverpool or Real Madrid if one of those clubs makes an offer.

According to Sport Bild via Sport Witness, Real Madrid or Liverpool have an open path to appoint Xabi Alonso as their new manager. The 41-year-old manager has a clause in his Bayer Leverkusen contract that would allow him to join either of his former teams if they come in with an offer.

Xabi Alonso is creating waves around in Germany as his Bayer Leverkusen sits at the summit of the Bundesliga standings. Six wins and a draw in their seven games so far have kept them unbeaten in the league. With a promising squad under his disposal, Alonso could lead them to a title challenge.

Alonso did not waste too much time showcasing his talents as a manager with Leverkusen last season. This time around, the players are absorbing his ideas with more maturity. In any case, his time at the Bundesliga side seems short, as the Spaniard has lofty ambitions for his career.

In fact, he has a clause in his contract that allows him to join one of his former sides if they come in with an offer. Chief among those are Real Madrid and Liverpool, who are keen on the 41-year-old manager in the future. Even Bayern Munich can snap him if they feel like dispersing off with Thomas Tuchel.

Liverpool have kept a watchful eye on the 41-year-old manager as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp in the future. Hence, if the Reds are serious about signing him, they will hope Alonso stays at Leverkusen in the foreseeable future.

Their biggest threat comes from Real Madrid, who are also interested. The Spanish giants may have an immediate need as Carlo Ancelotti could take over the Brazilian national team in 2024. They will look at the 41-year-old manager as a replacement.

Alonso may also prefer Real Madrid over other clubs like Liverpool or Bayern Munich if Florentino Perez came calling. Moreover, Klopp has a contract until 2026. Hence, unless there’s a complete overhaul of policy at Merseyside, the German is not expected to leave two years early.

Hence, Real Madrid are the favourites, and all they have to do is come in with an offer. There’s still no clarity on whether the ‘clause’ is a release clause or if there’s simply an agreement in place for the 41-year-old to leave.

Hence, there’s still a long way to go before Alonso takes over the reign either at Real Madrid or Liverpool. In all likeliness, the 41-year-old seems the favourite to replace Ancelotti rather than Klopp.
