Xabi Alonso front-runner to become next Tottenham manager

Tottenham Hotspur’s priority is to sign Bayer Leverkusen manager and Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso as their new boss ahead of next season.

According to De Telegraaf, Xabi Alonso is the front-runner to be the next manager of Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs are keen on having the Bayer Leverkusen boss on their bench and have made the Liverpool legend their priority target before heading into next season.

Alonso has featured for some of the biggest clubs in world football during his playing days. The 41-year-old was part of Liverpool, Real Madrid & Bayern Munich. He had a successful playing career and his managerial career is off to a flyer.

The Liverpool and Real Madrid legend has done wonders as the manager of Bayer Leverkusen. His team are currently 6th in the Bundesliga and have made it to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

After being in charge of Real Sociedad B for a few years, the 41-year-old started his journey as the first-team manager in the ongoing season. He joined Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022 and has since had a major impact on their squad.

Alonso has managed the German club in 31 matches. He has won 17, drawn seven and lost seven games. The 41-year-old averages 1.87 points per match. His performances in the ongoing season have resulted in a lot of attention from clubs across Europe.

Tottenham parted ways with Antonio Conte a few weeks back, the Italian manager failed to end their trophy drought and spoke against the club and its players in a press conference. Things didn’t go down well with the people at the club and they decided to show him the exit door.

Tottenham Hotspur have since been in search of a new manager. They are keen on having the Bayer Leverkusen manager on their bench ahead of next season. His performances have impressed the people at the club, and they believe the Liverpool legend could help their cause. Alonso has also emerged on the radar of former club Real Madrid.

While their priority is to sign the Spanish manager, they also have Arne Slot as a backup option. The 44-year-old has done wonders at Feyenoord. However, he hasn’t managed in any of the top five leagues. And, Alonso’s experience as a player gives him the edge.
