West Ham United are considering appointing Xabi Alonso as their next manager as David Moyes could depart in the summer.

According to The Sun, Xabi Alonso has emerged as a target for West Ham United in the summer. The Bayer Leverkusen boss remains a firm contender to replace David Moyes if the Scot departs the London Stadium after the season ends.

West Ham United have a big decision on their hands regarding their managerial situation. Things have not gone well for David Moyes this term after achieving plenty of progress in the previous few seasons. Many have urged the Hammers to part ways with the Scot and embark on a different journey.

West Ham have the means to become a top side, challenging for trophies. Instead, they are on the cusp of a relegation battle, which has improved recently. Few results, especially the draw against Arsenal and the big win over Bournemouth, have restored some faith in Moyes. But that may not hold up beyond the summer.

The report suggests West Ham are considering appointing Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso as Moyes’s successor from next season. The 41-year-old Spaniard has had a bright start to his managerial career, making plenty of progress with Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen appointed Alonso in October 2022 when they languished on the cusp of the relegation zone. The Liverpool legend has led to a turnaround in fortunes, with the club now among the top six and into the Semi-Finals of the Europa League.

He was recently linked with a move to Chelsea as the Blues continue their search for a new manager. Such has been the Spaniard’s rise, considered one of the most talented managers and spoken in the same breath as Mikel Arteta or Vincent Kompany.

West Ham could offer him the chance to start his career in the Premier League. With the club able to become a challenger to a certain level, any manager would like to take the opportunity. There’s no certainty that Moyes could depart. But that is perceived as the ideal plan for the Hammers to enter the future.

While Alonso lacks massive experience apart from managing Real Sociedad’s B-team and now Leverkusen, some may see West Ham taking a gamble with his appointment. However, there’s much evidence of his talents and his letting Leverkusen progress this season.
