Ruben Amorim on Real Madrid radar

Ruben Amorim is reportedly on Real Madrid’s radar, with Florentino Perez having the 38-year-old on his list of future appointments.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Ruben Amorim is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions have the 38-year-old on their list of future appointments. And they will keep a close eye on Sporting CP’s upcoming UEFA Europa League tie with Juventus.

Ruben Amorim was a midfielder in his playing days but did not enjoy a long career. The Portuguese tactician represented clubs like Belenenses and Benfica, even winning ten trophies with the latter. But his time as a footballer ended when he was only 32 years old before he entered the managerial world.

The 38-year-old cut his teeth at Casa Pia Atletico Clube and SC Braga B before joining Braga’s first team in 2019. But despite winning Taca da Liga with Braga, he left after only a year. And Amorim’s stock has risen since his move to Sporting CP in 2020.

The Portuguese manager has won four trophies with Sporting, including the Primeira Liga in his first season. And Amorim’s men have been impressive this season, beating the high-flying Arsenal in the Europa League. The young tactician’s progress has not gone unnoticed, either, with Real Madrid among his prospective suitors.

Real Madrid might be in the market for a manager amid uncertainties surrounding Carlo Ancelotti’s future. The Italian tactician has enjoyed a fruitful return to the dugout at the Santiago Bernabeu. But while he completed the UEFA Champions League and La Liga double last season, he might leave at the end of this term.

Recent reports have also linked Ancelotti with the vacant Brazilian national team job. So Real Madrid must prepare for life after the 63-year-old if he leaves at the end of the season. And Florentino Perez has several candidates on his shortlist, including Amorim. The report also claims that Real Madrid will monitor Sporting’s two Europa League games against Juventus.

In addition, Amorim’s penchant to use the 3-4-3 formation will not work against him. So the 38-year-old Portuguese manager can potentially stamp his authority at Real Madrid. But the Merengues have several other candidates on their shortlist, with Mauricio Pochettino reportedly the favourite to replace Ancelotti.
