Real Madrid will consider appointing 47-year-old Argentine manager Marcelo Gallardo if Carlo Ancelotti leaves at the end of the season.
According to a report by UOL Esporte, Marcelo Gallardo is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions are compiling a shortlist of candidates to replace Carlo Ancelotti. And the 47-year-old Argentine manager has emerged as a viable target.
Marcelo Gallardo enjoyed a fruitful professional career, spending three stints with River Plate. He also had two stints in Europe, turning out for AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain. An attacking midfielder, the 47-year-old also made 44 appearances for the Argentine national side.
After finishing his professional career, the Argentine manager entered the managerial world by taking up a job at Nacional. But he has risen to prominence following his stint with River Plate. Arguably Gallardo’s soul club, he spent eight seasons with the Argentine heavyweights between 2014 and 2022.
Gallardo guided River Plate to numerous titles, reaching the pinnacle in the 2021 season by winning the Argentine Primera Division. In all, he won 14 trophies with River Plate in what was an illustrious stint with the club. But he is now a free agent after leaving River Plate at the end of the 2022 season. And his next job might come in Europe, with Real Madrid interested.
Real Madrid might have to scour the managerial market for a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian tactician has enjoyed a solid second coming at the Bernabeu, guiding Real Madrid to the Champions League and La Liga double. But the Merengues face the risk of ending the 2022/23 season without a trophy. And that might cost Ancelotti his job at the helm at the Bernabeu.
Several candidates, including Julian Nagelsmann, have thus emerged on Real Madrid’s radar. And Marcelo Gallardo is also a viable target for the reigning La Liga champions. Appointing the 47-year-old might be risky, considering this will be his first job in Europe. But he will bring fresh ideas to the table.
But apart from Gallardo, the Merengues also have other candidates on their radar, including Mauricio Pochettino, Nagelsmann and Zinedine Zidane. However, it will be interesting to see if the 47-year-old Argentine manager becomes the top target to replace Ancelotti.
