La Liga champions Real Madrid are reportedly contemplating appointing 59-year-old Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Jose Mourinho will be Florentino Perez’s first choice when Carlo Ancelotti leaves Real Madrid. The 59-year-old Portuguese manager is considering calling it quits at AS Roma as he feels the project is not headed in the right direction. So a surprise Real Madrid reunion might be on the cards.

Jose Mourinho is one of the most well-known managers of his generation. And at a time when footballers are constantly on the pedestal, the 59-year-old is a rare coach to have achieved superstardom. Mourinho has enjoyed successful stints with Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid.

The Portuguese manager is currently at AS Roma and has overseen the UEFA Europa Conference League triumph at Stadio Olimpico. Mourinho also hopes to guide the Giallorossi back to the top four in Serie A. But his team is lagging in the race to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, with Roma currently seventh on the table.

With second-placed Lazio four points ahead, Mourinho might fancy the chances of his team. But the report by Fichajes suggests that the 59-year-old might leave AS Roma before his contract expires as he feels the project is not headed in the right direction. And his next destination could surprisingly be Real Madrid.

Mourinho has previously spent three years at Real Madrid, winning three trophies along the way, including the 2011/12 La Liga title. And Real Madrid might launch the offensive for the Portuguese manager if Carlo Ancelotti calls it quits at the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the season.

Ancelotti’s contract expires next summer, and he is yet to agree to an extension. Reports earlier this year claimed that Real Madrid had compiled a shortlist to identify the replacement for Ancelotti. But according to Fichajes, Mourinho will be Florentino Perez’s first choice to succeed the Italian tactician.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has also emerged on Los Blancos’ radar. But with Ancelotti doing exceedingly well in his second stint with the Spanish giants, it is understandable why they might want a reunion with the 59-year-old Mourinho.
