Transfer News: Andriy Lunin on AS Roma radar

Serie A giants AS Roma are reportedly interested in signing Andriy Lunin from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Andriy Lunin is the subject of interest from AS Roma over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Serie A giants have several Real Madrid players on their radar, with the out-of-favour goalkeeper a key target.

Andriy Lunin joined Real Madrid from Zorya Luhansk in July 2018 amid a lot of hype surrounding him. Widely regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe at the time, the 23-year-old’s progress has stalled as he has had to play second fiddle to Thibaut Courtois for the most part.

Lunin has also been sent out on loan thrice but was kept onboard at the Santiago Bernabeu last summer. But the Ukrainian international has had to suffice with rare appearances in cup games and has turned out just twice for Real Madrid this term. As a result, Lunin has grown increasingly frustrated with his situation at Real Madrid and could seek a summer exit.

Lunin had also been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu in the January transfer window amid widespread links with Ajax, but a move failed to materialise. AS Roma could now offer the youngster an escape route from his frustrations at Real Madrid, with Jose Mourinho keen on signing him.

The Serie A giants signed a goalkeeper last summer by replacing Pau Lopez with Rui Patricio. But the Portuguese international is entering the final phase of his career and will only be a short-term solution. Signing Lunin could thus enable AS Roma to lay down a succession plan for the 33-year-old.

But the Ukrainian goalkeeper is not the only Real Madrid outcast on AS Roma’s radar, with the Giallorossi also linked with Eden Hazard, Dani Ceballos, Mariano Diaz, Dani Ceballos and Jesus Vallejo. Mariano was also a January target for the Serie A giants, but the 28-year-old chose to stay put at Real Madrid.

As for the pursuit of Lunin, the 23-year-old’s situation is unlikely to improve straight away if he joins AS Roma. But with Patricio closer to the end of his career than Courtois, moving to the Serie A club could keep the Real Madrid outcast in good stead.
