Barcelona are reportedly weighing up the prospect of signing 25-year-old Spanish left-back Alfonso Pedraza from Villarreal this month.

According to reputed Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, Alfonso Pedraza has emerged on the radar of Barcelona over a possible move in the ongoing transfer window. The 25-year-old Villarreal left-back is being viewed as a short-term loan investment by the Blaugrana.

Alfonso Pedraza has been with Villarreal for over a decade, having joined the club’s youth setup from Seneca CF in July 2011. But it was only in the 2020/21 season that the Spanish defender truly established a foothold within the Yellow Submarine’s first-team squad.

The 25-year-old has continued to go from strength to strength in the ongoing campaign, amassing four assists in 21 appearances across all competitions. Pedraza’s exploits have duly been noted by one of the biggest clubs in Europe, with Barcelona keen on signing him in the January transfer window.

Jordi Alba remains the first-choice left-back at Barcelona, but his performance levels have dipped considerably in the last few years. The Spanish international’s advancing years have affected his form greatly, and it has become imperative for Barcelona to lay down a succession plan for him.

But Barcelona will need immediate solutions to bypass Alba’s faltering form, which is why they have set their sights on several left-backs to target over a short-term loan deal. One of the players on the Blaugrana’s radar is Alex Telles, with Pedraza also emerging as a viable target.

The 25-year-old is one of five left-backs in Barcelona’s latest wishlist, with the club admiring two of them in particular. But Gerard Romero has not revealed the identity of these two defenders, with the only available information being the Catalan giants’ desire to sign a left-back on loan for the remainder of the season.

Villarreal’s stance over loaning out Pedraza to Barcelona also remains unclear, although it might be fair to presume that the Yellow Submarine could be hesitant in sending the 25-year-old to a La Liga rival in the middle of a season. For now, Pedraza has emerged on Barcelona’s radar over a possible January loan move, and it will be interesting to see if he arrives at Camp Nou this month.
