Barcelona and Chelsea have reportedly contacted the agents of Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara over a summer transfer.

According to a report from Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna, Barcelona and Chelsea have made contact with the representatives of Boubacar Kamara to explore the possibility of a transfer in the summer, when his contract with Marseille expires.

Kamara is a product of the Marseille youth academy and made his first-team breakthrough in 2017, aged 17 years and 11 months. Having burst onto the scenes as a centre-back, the French starlet has modified himself into a defensive midfielder and become a mainstay in the starting XI for the Ligue 1 outfit, racking up 143 appearances so far.

However, his time with Marseille could soon end as Kamara’s contract will run out in the summer and talks over a new deal have ceased. The 22-year-old’s situation has attracted interest from clubs across Europe, with the likes of Manchester United and Newcastle United even trying to snare him away in January.

At the same time, Barcelona and Chelsea are also in the fray for Kamara’s signing and have made contact with his agent over a possible summer transfer.

Barcelona have a packed midfield unit as things stand, but the Blaugrana will need to start laying down a succession plan for club captain Sergio Busquets, who is not getting any younger. A player like Kamara, who at 22 has his best years in front of him and would be available on a free transfer, is certainly of appeal to the Catalan heavyweights.

Chelsea also need to start planning for the future as N’Golo Kante has been plagued with injury problems over the past eighteen months or so, while Jorginho continues to flirt with a potential return to Italy. Reinforcements in the middle of the park could become a necessity for Thomas Tuchel, especially with the club unlikely to sign Saul Niguez permanently after his poor start to life in London.

To that end, Kamara has emerged as a potential target, with Chelsea even contacting his agent over a possible transfer at the end of the season, along with Barcelona. Bayern Munich, too, are believed to be in the race to sign the 22-year-old Frenchman. It will certainly be interesting to see who comes out on top in the battle for the Marseille midfielder later this year.
