Aston Villa have reportedly initiated talks with Everton over the transfer of Lucas Digne, who has fallen out with Rafael Benitez, with the Toffees keen to sell.

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa have become the latest club to mull over a move for Lucas Digne and have made contact with their Everton counterparts over a prospective transfer. The Frenchman remains frozen out under Rafael Benitez, with the Merseyside outfit keen on selling the left-back this month.

From being Everton’s undisputed choice at left-back, Lucas Digne has seen his status change to becoming a wantaway star in a matter of months. Following a reported dispute with manager Rafael Benitez over playing style and tactics, the Spaniard has frozen out the French defender from his plans at the club.

Despite Everton begging for creativity and chances in the final third, Digne has not been preferred in recent weeks. And while he recently made it to the matchday squad for the game against Brighton & Hove Albion, Digne did not feature for the Toffees, which casts doubt on his future.

Of late, Chelsea have stepped up their interest in the 28-year-old left-back as they seek cover for the injured Ben Chilwell. The Blues remain keen on signing Digne, but they will first explore the option of recalling on-loan Italian international Emerson Palmieri from Lyon.

Newcastle United have also shown an interest in the Frenchman to shore up their defence after agreeing on a deal to sign right-back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid. Digne, however, may not be interested in a move to St. James’ Park if reports are accurate, as he might be wary of the relegation battle that lies ahead for the club.

Aston Villa are now ready to challenge Chelsea for his signature, with Steven Gerrard eyeing an upgrade for the left-back slot. Matt Targett remains the Villans’ only recognised left-back, while an ageing Ashley Young has been efficient from an advanced position.

Aston Villa have now reportedly contacted Everton over a move and could table an offer if the conditions are appropriate. The Toffees are reportedly looking to recoup around £30 million from the experienced full-back’s sale, which could prove to be a competitive price in this market for a player like Digne.

Aston Villa might look to reduce that fee a bit, although if Chelsea buck up their interest, things could heat up in this race to sign the French international. In the end, Digne could be left with plenty of choices as he looks to leave the Everton for good this month.
