Real Madrid reportedly view 21-year-old VfL Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix as an alternative to their primary target Antonio Rudiger.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Maxence Lacroix has emerged on the radar of Real Madrid over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Spanish giants consider the 21-year-old VfL Wolfsburg defender as a potential alternative to Antonio Rudiger.

Maxence Lacroix joined VfL Wolfsburg from FC Sochaux in August 2020 and has since established himself as one of the most promising young defenders in the Bundesliga. The youngster has carved out a place for himself in the Wolves’ first-team squad in a short period while becoming a key figure for the Bundesliga outfit.

To date, the 21-year-old has made 57 appearances for Wolfsburg, chipping in with two goals and one assist in the process. Lacroix’s exploits have helped him capture the attention of some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with Real Madrid the latest marquee outfit to show interest in him.

The Spanish giants are reportedly in the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window, and with good reason. While David Alaba has been a solid addition to Real Madrid’s defensive unit, it is worth noting that the Austrian was the only addition to the backline despite the departures of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.

Eder Militao has also stepped up since the two Real Madrid stalwarts exited the club. However, there is little quality beyond Militao and Alaba, leaving Real Madrid in need of signing a centre-back. To that end, recent reports have claimed that Antonio Rudiger is the priority target for Los Blancos, with the two parties already reaching a verbal agreement over a Bosman move in the summer.

However, the La Liga heavyweights are keeping their options open as Rudiger will be a popular figure in the transfer market. To that end, Pau Torres recently emerged as a possible option for Real Madrid. And now, Maxence Lacroix has popped up on the Merengues’ radar over a potential summer move.

Interestingly, Lacroix is also a target for Chelsea, considered as a possible replacement for Rudiger. However, with Real Madrid entering the picture, it will be interesting to see if the 21-year-old will be on his way to the Spanish capital instead of London if he decides to leave Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg in the summer.
