Barcelona are reportedly weighing up the possibility of securing the services of 27-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder Corentin Tolisso on a free transfer.

According to reputed journalist Gerard Romero on his Twitch channel, as relayed by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Corentin Tolisso has emerged as a target for Barcelona over a Bosman move in next summer’s transfer window. The 27-year-old is destined to leave Bayern Munich as a free agent in June.

Corentin Tolisso joined Bayern Munich from Lyon in July 2017, snubbing several other bigwigs of European football to make his way to the Allianz Arena. However, the French midfielder has endured a difficult spell with the Bundesliga giants, as, after a strong start to life with the club, his game-time has been severely restricted by injuries and poor form.

To date, the 27-year-old has made 109 appearances for Bayern Munich, chipping in with 19 goals and 15 assists in the process. However, after being rendered a backup option in Bavaria, Tolisso is set to leave Bayern Munich as a free agent by running down his current contract. His situation has captured the attention of Barcelona.

The Catalan giants are primed for a squad overhaul heading into next summer’s transfer window as Xavi looks to shape the squad to his liking. To that end, reinforcing midfield has emerged as one of the priorities for Barcelona, and for a good reason.

With Sergio Busquets in the twilight of his career and Miralem Pjanic likely to be sold once he returns from his loan spell with Besiktas, Barcelona’s need to sign a midfielder is understandable. In addition, doubts are emerging over Frenkie de Jong’s long-term future. At the same time, Gavi is a highly sought-after player, and Riqui Puig could depart Camp Nou to seek regular game-time.

As a result, it behoves Barcelona to bolster their midfield unit, with Tolisso emerging as a viable target. According to Gerard Romero, the La Liga heavyweights will likely go for a free transfer to boost Xavi’s midfield unit, with Tolisso, Axel Witsel and Denis Zakaria among their options to that end.

In addition to Barcelona, the 27-year-old has also been linked with several other clubs, including Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal. So, with his Bayern Munich fate sealed, it remains to be seen if Barcelona can beat the competition to prise Tolisso away from the Bundesliga club on a Bosman move next summer.
