Transfer News: Chelsea plotting Theo Hernandez move

Chelsea are reportedly lining up a January move for French defender Theo Hernandez, valued at around €40 million by Serie A giants AC Milan.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Theo Hernandez is the subject of interest from Chelsea over a move in the January transfer window. The Blues will need to pay €40 million to sign the 24-year-old defender from Serie A giants AC Milan.

Theo Hernandez has established himself as one of the best full-backs in Serie A since joining AC Milan from Real Madrid in July 2019. The French international never got going at Real Madrid but has gone from strength to strength at San Siro, even breaking into his nation’s senior side this year.

To date, the 24-year-old has made 100 appearances for AC Milan, chipping in with 16 goals and 18 assists in the process. The player’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with some of the biggest clubs in Europe setting their sights on him. Such a situation has put the Serie A giants in a spot of bother, with Chelsea emerging as the latest big-name club to show an interest in him.

Widespread reports have claimed that Chelsea could enter the transfer market for a left wing-back this coming January. That is because Marcos Alonso has been deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge due to his inconsistent performances since Thomas Tuchel took charge.

As a result, the Spaniard has been linked with several clubs, including Barcelona and Serie A giants Lazio. And while Ben Chilwell has been impressive after a slow start to the season, Tuchel’s tendency to rotate his troops aggressively means Chelsea must sign a top-class left wing-back.

To that end, the west Londoners have recently been linked with several full-backs that fit the bill, with Lucas Digne among the players on their radar. And Theo Hernandez is also a viable target for Chelsea, with Tuchel eager to bring him on board at Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window.

Keeping Chelsea’s financial health in mind, signing the French defender will not cost much, as AC Milan will demand €40 million in exchange for his services. According to El Nacional, talks between Hernandez and Chelsea are already underway, with the Blues also preparing an offer to prise him away from the Serie A club.

As per the report, Hernandez is not opposed to the idea of joining Chelsea and is eager to take his career to the next level at the club. So, with the stars seemingly aligning well for all parties involved, it remains to be seen if the Premier League heavyweights table a €40 million bid to land the 24-year-old this coming winter.
