Antonio Rudiger has reportedly reached a verbal agreement to join Real Madrid, leaving Chelsea as a free agent next summer.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Antonio Rudiger is inching closer to joining Real Madrid in next summer’s transfer window. The German defender is now set to leave Chelsea as a free agent when his contract runs out on June 30, 2022.

Antonio Rudiger has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the Chelsea manager in January. However, the Blues are in a precarious position over his long-term future, as he is in the final year of his contract with the club.

To date, the 28-year-old has made 170 appearances for Chelsea, chipping in with nine goals and seven assists along the way. However, with every passing week, it looks likelier that Rudiger will be leaving Chelsea as a free agent, with his next destination possibly being Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants have been hot on the trail of Rudiger for months, showing an interest in him ever since he entered the final twelve months of his Chelsea contract. The interest in the German international does make sense, considering there is a scarcity of reliable centre-backs at Real Madrid.

Such a situation has arisen because Real Madrid bought just one viable central defensive option in the summer in David Alaba despite losing Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane. While Eder Militao has stepped up superbly this season, there is very little quality beyond the Brazilian and Alaba.

As a result, the Merengues are eager to bolster their central defensive unit next summer, with Rudiger the priority target. According to recent reports, Rudiger prefers to join Real Madrid over other suitors like Liverpool, Manchester United and Bayern Munich. And now, the Chelsea centre-back has reached a verbal agreement to join Real Madrid.

The latest update comes in the wake of recent reports, which has suggested that the La Liga heavyweights were preparing their final offer to sign Rudiger. So, it looks like Rudiger’s time at Chelsea is winding down, with a Bosman move to Real Madrid almost set in stone as he seeks a new challenge in his career.
