Transfer News: Ajax make official approach to sign Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn

Ajax have stepped up their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn in the January transfer window.

According to Telegraaf, Ajax have made their interest known regarding the services of Steven Bergwijn. They are one of the clubs in contention to sign the explosive forward, who is facing an uncertain future at Tottenham Hotspur.

The club manager Antonio Conte has recently confirmed that he will evaluate Bergwijn’s situation in the upcoming January transfer window, and a potential return to the Netherlands could be on the horizon. It could be a massive boost for Ajax side that is currently on the lookout for attacking reinforcements next month.

The Dutch champions have enjoyed immense success this season, winning all of their group games in the UEFA Champions League while leading the Eredivisie table. But it seems coach Erik ten Hag is aiming to add more depth to the squad in an attempt to advance his team’s chances in both domestic and European competitions.

It appears Ajax are also concerned regarding the long-term future of star player Antony. The Brazilian has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich and Manchester City earlier in the season, and it is only a matter of time before he moves on, though perhaps not necessarily in the January transfer window. Hence, the Eredivisie giants have set their sights on Steven Bergwijn.

Formerly of PSV, the Dutch winger has endured a difficult spell at Spurs after joining the club at the start of last year. He has struggled with a lack of consistency and productivity in the final third. As a result, he has fallen down the pecking order at Spurs, having featured in only seven league matches this season.

Tottenham are well aware of Bergwijn’s struggles in the Premier League and are willing to consider a potential exit in January. Ajax have already emerged as a potential destination for the Dutch international, but it won’t be surprising to see more clubs joining the race to sign the explosive winger next month.

With 72 goal involvements in 149 competitive appearances for PSV, coupled with 16 caps for the Dutch national team, Bergwijn brings a wealth of experience to the table. His pace and trickery on the flanks may also make him a useful asset for any mid-table club in the Premier League, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 24-year-old in the coming weeks.
