Transfer News: Ajax set sights on Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn

Eredivisie champions Ajax have entered the market for out of sorts Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn.

According to the Telegraaf’s Kickoff podcast, Steven Bergwijn has emerged as a potential transfer target for Ajax. The Dutch champions are scouring the market for potential candidates that can shore up their offensive options in the upcoming January transfer window, as they look to fare well in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.

Ajax have already registered in RB Leipzig forward Brian Brobbey. But it appears they have also set their sights on Bergwijn as well, hoping to lure the Tottenham forward back to the Netherlands.

Formerly of PSV, Bergwijn joined Spurs at the start of last year. He was coming on the back of a stellar record for PSV, having been involved in 72 goals in less than 150 competitive appearances.

However, the Dutchman has never really managed to replicate his performances in the Premier League. Under the leadership of Jose Mourinho last season, the player struggled with a lack of consistency. He scored only one goal in 21 league appearances, significantly losing his importance in the team and falling behind Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura in the pecking order.

It has been a similar story this season, with Bergwijn managing only 271 minutes of league football. And with Tottenham seemingly intent on further reinforcing their offensive unit with the addition of stars like Dejan Kulusevski, the Dutchman is in danger of becoming a fringe player in North London.

However, it appears Ajax are ready to hand him an opportunity to return to the Netherlands and potentially revive his career. The Dutch champions are keen on reinforcing their attacking options for the second half of the campaign as they look to make an impression in the UEFA Champions League.

Ajax may also be aware of the uncertain future of their star man Antony. The Brazilian has been one of Europe’s rising stars this season and has unsurprisingly attracted interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, among many other top clubs across the world.

The potential addition of Bergwijn, in that regard, could help Ajax strengthen their depth in the attack as well as build a strong core for the future. At the age of just 24, the former PSV starlet has time on his side and the potential to become a real asset for the Dutch champions in the years to come.
