Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on 17-year-old Spanish prodigy Mario Fuentes, termed the “new Lewandowski”.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Mario Fuentes is the latest precocious talent to have emerged on the radar of Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are eyeing a move for the 17-year-old Real Oviedo prodigy, branded as the “new Lewandowski”.

Mario Fuentes is one of the most promising young attacking players in Spain, having come leaps and bounds in the age-division levels at Real Oviedo. The teenage prodigy has 14 goals in 12 games in the Division de Honor Juvenil this season. More impressively, he has cultivated a habit of scoring goals for fun, which is why he is termed the “new Lewandowski” in his homeland.

In the last five seasons, the 17-year-old has scored a staggering 180 goals at an average of 36 per campaign. Fuentes’s exploits in Real Oviedo’s youth setup have duly been noted, with Real Madrid among the clubs that have had their sights firmly set on him in recent years.

During Florentino Perez’s reign as the Real Madrid president, the Spanish giants have constantly been on the lookout for some of the most promising young players in Europe and across the world. Such an outlook has fetched them prodigious players like Federico Valverde, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes, each of whom have become regular fixtures in the first-team setup.

So, it is hardly surprising that several whizkids have been linked with Real Madrid in recent weeks. As far as the confines of Spain is concerned, Alvaro Leiva is the latest to have popped up on the radar of Los Blancos.

It has also been suggested that the Merengues are closing in on securing the services of Gonzalo Sosa, while several Brazilian prodigies have also been linked with Real Madrid. And now, Mario Fuentes has emerged as a key target for Real Madrid, who are looking to incorporate him in La Fabrica.

Branded as the “new Lewandowski” in Spain, the 17-year-old prodigy could well become a long-term solution in attack for Real Madrid, provided he can continue remaining on a consistently upwards trajectory in age-division football. For now, Fuentes has popped up on Real Madrid’s radar, and it remains to be seen if the Spanish giants launch the offensive for him anytime soon.
