Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing 21-year-old Argentine attacker Julian Alvarez on a potential cut-price deal.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid have set their sights on Julian Alvarez over a move in next summer’s transfer window. In fact, the 21-year-old River Plate attacker could potentially arrive on a cut-price deal, with his current contract expiring in a little over a year’s time.

Julian Alvarez joined River Plate from Atletico Calchin in 2016 before making swift progress in the Argentine outfit’s youth setup. And in just two years’ time, aged just 18, the player broke into the first-team setup at the Buenos Aires-based club and he has since gone on to become a mainstay in attack for them.

The ongoing season, in particular, has been one to remember for the 21-year-old, who has 11 goals and as many assists in 35 appearances across all competitions. His progress over the last couple of years has not gone unnoticed, with one of the biggest clubs in the world in Real Madrid now setting their sights on him.

Real Madrid have constantly been on the lookout for the brightest young talents across the world over the years. However, in recent times, there has been a keen focus on emerging South American prospects as well, with such an outlook fetching them Federico Valverde, Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo Goes, among others.

The aforementioned trio are now feature regularly for Real Madrid after making fine progress at the Santiago Bernabeu. And it looks like Alvarez could be the latest South American attacker to have featured on the Merengues’ radar, with the interest being understandable as well amid their search for an attacking reinforcement for next summer.

Bolstering the wide areas could be on their agenda as well, especially if Marco Asensio becomes surplus to requirements, as some reports suggest. With Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale on the wrong side of 30, it is not too surprising that Real Madrid are looking to facilitate a smooth transition to the next generation, with Alvarez now emerging as a viable target.

That the Argentine international’s contract with River Plate will expire in less than 15 months is an added incentive to pursue a cut-price deal in the times of a pandemic, that has adversely affected the bottom lines of just about every club in the game. However, with the interest in the 21-year-old mounting, it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid indeed win the race to snap him up.
