Transfer News: Chelsea, Liverpool handed boost in Kingsley Coman chase

Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman could be about to seek a new challenge amidst interest from Liverpool and Chelsea

According to The Mirror, Premier League giants Chelsea and Liverpool have been handed a boost in their efforts to land Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman.

The French winger was linked with both clubs last summer. However, his asking price of £86 million proved to be prohibitive. A stellar wide-man on his day, Coman scored the winner for Bayern in the 2020 UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Coman has in fact, won the league title in every season of his senior career. He has won the Ligue 1 with PSG, the Scudetto with Juventus, and the Bundesliga with Bayern.

This is a good omen for both Chelsea and Liverpool, both of whom are matching each other blow for blow in the Premier League so far. Adding a player of Coman’s ability, will certainly perk up a side’s pace and attacking prowess.

The Frenchman recently underwent minor heart surgery. He has so far made four appearances for Bayern this season and is currently out of action until October. Coman’s contract at the Allianz Arena runs until 2023, handing Bayern an advantage in contract negotiations.

The player, however, does not appear to be too keen to stay on at Bayern, a place he feels undervalued at. Unless the Germans make their move, there is every reason to believe Coman will seek a fresh challenge elsewhere.

Former Bayern midfielder Christian Nerlinger has now given his verdict on Coman’s future. He believes the Frenchman will not stay on at Bayern. The Germans lost a key first-team player in David Alaba for free this summer. Nerlinger has backed the German giants to cash in on Coman, a player he has a high opinion of.

“Coman is an excellent player, but given the situation, I think Bayern will consider selling him.”

Bayern haven’t really missed Coman as they continue their run at the top of the Bundesliga table. The Frenchman could, however, be valued at a higher pedestal at both Liverpool and Chelsea.

Jurgen Klopp’s side is a formidable one that remains one of the top dogs in Europe. However, it is an ageing one, and the Reds will need to replace on their vaunted front three sooner or later. Coman can play on either flank and has the potential to become a major force in the years to come. He will add the much-needed dynamism to the Liverpool attack that has at times gone stale of late.

The same can be said of Chelsea, who could also do with a goalscoring winger. Both Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech have failed to live up to their expectations. Bringing in a player such as Coman is sure to wake them up from their slumber.

Despite his brilliance, Coman has been held back by his physical fragility. The 25-year-old has missed 88 games for Bayern due to injuries over the years. During the same time, he has made 204 appearances for the Bavarians. It is fair to say that Coman is a high-risk player but also promises a high reward. Whether Liverpool or Chelsea end up moving for him remains to be seen.
