Transfer News: Barcelona set sights on Devyne Rensch

Barcelona have reportedly identified 18-year-old Dutch prodigy Devyne Rensch as their next defensive reinforcement, who would be eager to join them.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona are interested in signing Devyne Rensch in a future transfer window. It is not clear which position the Dutch prodigy would bolster in the defensive unit, but he would be prepared to realise his dream of representing the Blaugrana.

Devyne Rensch joined Ajax from VV Unicum at youth level in 2016 and has since made remarkable progress in his career. The teenage prodigy made his first-team debut for the Dutch giants last year before going on to feature quite regularly for the club in the 2020/21 season.

The 18-year-old has started the ongoing campaign strongly as well and so far in his Ajax career, he has made 32 appearances, with three goals and two assists to show for his efforts. Rensch’s greatest asset is his versatility, with the youngster capable of playing across the defensive line. And it is this versatility that has captured the attention of Barcelona.

While Rensch is primarily a right-back, he could potentially be a solution in the left-back position, where Jose Gaya has so far been eyed as a long-term replacement for Jordi Alba. If the pursuit of Gaya goes kaput then Rensch could well be a longer term option, alongside Alejandro Balde.

As far as the right-back slot is concerned, Barcelona chose to cash in on Emerson Royal this past summer, with Sergino Dest the firm first-choice option. Rensch, if he is signed, will then be a rotation option along with the former Ajax defender.

At the heart of the defence, Rensch could well get his chances once Gerard Pique calls it a day, with Eric Garcia and Ronald Araujo the long-term central defensive partnership as things stand. All in all, the 18-year-old could be utilised in several different ways, thereby making him a viable target for Barcelona.
