Tottenham Hotspur have completed their latest signing of the summer transfer window, with Cristian Romero joining from Atalanta on a permanent deal.

Tottenham Hotspur have made an official statement to confirm that they have secured the services of Cristian Romero. The 23-year-old Argentine defender has become Spurs’ third signing of the summer transfer window, signing a five-year deal, with Atalanta receiving €55 million in exchange of his services.

Cristian Romero’s stock is at an all time high following a splendid last twelve months or so. Having joined Atalanta from Juventus last summer on a two-year loan deal, the youngster made such a top class impression that he was named the “Best Defender” in Serie A for the 2020/21 season.

The 23-year-old featured 42 times for La Dea last term, chipping in with three goals and five assists along the way. In addition, Romero was also impressive for Argentina at Copa America, wherein La Albiceleste went all the way to lift the trophy. The player’s progress invariably alerted a number of top clubs across Europe, with Tottenham particularly showing a lot of interest in signing him.

The interest from Tottenham made a lot of sense, especially in the wake of Toby Alderweireld’s departure from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier in the summer. In addition, it is also important to note that Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier have been nothing short of sub-par in recent times.

With Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga being too young and not ready to feature week in week out, Tottenham needed to sign a top class centre-back this summer, with Romero emerging as a viable target. In fact, Spurs wasted little time in submitting an offer for the 23-year-old.

In recent weeks, it became clear that Tottenham were the clear front-runners in pursuit of Romero, with widespread claims pointing towards an agreement over a €55 million deal being reached. And that is exactly the case, with the Argentine international now arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As per reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham will pay Atalanta €55 million for the services of Romero, who has penned a five-year contract. The youngster also reunites with Pierluigi Gollini, who arrived at the north London club earlier in the summer. A new phase beckons Romero now and it will be interesting to see if he can take his career to the next level in the Premier League.
