Tottenham Hotspur are joined by Chelsea in the race to sign VfL Wolfsburg’s defensive ace Maxence Lacroix this summer.
According to Transfermarketweb, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to rival RB Leipzig in the pursuit of Maxence Lacroix. The VfL Wolfsburg starlet is expected to leave the club after a successful season, with Leipzig apparently in pole position.
However, their hopes could be marred by Tottenham joining the race, while fellow London rivals Chelsea are interested as well. Lacroix is valued at around €28 million.
It is a fairly reasonable value for a player who has emerged as one of Bundesliga’s finest young defenders. A product of the Sochaux youth academy, much like Liverpool’s newest signing and another ex-Bundesliga defensive talent Ibrahima Konate, Lacroix initially joined the club last summer.
The Frenchman’s formidable defensive partnership alongside John Anthony Brooks was integral in helping Wolfsburg secure a place in the Champions League. And now it appears Tottenham are ready to prise him away from Germany, with new coach Nuno Espirito Santo determined to bolster his options at the back.
The Lilywhites have already been linked with a move for Takehiro Tomiyasu and Nikola Milenkovic this summer. However, in Lacroix, they could land themselves one of the newest additions to the long list of highly-talented French centre-backs.
Spurs need to be aware of Chelsea’s interest in Lacroix, though. The Blues have recently won the UEFA Champions League, with vacancies in their defensive unit, especially after the permanent departure of Fikayo Tomori. It makes Stamford Bridge an appealing destination for a young player like Lacroix.
The Blues, though, are eyeing a move for a high-profile and well-established centre-back. The newly crowned European champions are one of the clubs keeping tabs on Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule, who faces an uncertain future in Bavaria.
Nevertheless, it is fair to point out that Leipzig are indeed the favourites in the pursuit of Lacroix. They have been the breeding ground for several quality defenders in the past. The departures of Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate have created a major void in the defensive unit – a void Lacroix can fill perfectly with his technical ability and Bundesliga experience.
It now remains to be seen whether RB Leipzig are able to clinch the signing of the talented Frenchman or whether Tottenham or Chelsea beat them to the punch.
