Manchester United are reportedly prepared to hand Real Madrid contract rebel Raphael Varane a lucrative €12 million-a-year deal.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Raphael Varane appears to be edging ever closer to calling it quits at Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. Manchester United seem to be his next destination, with the Premier League heavyweights ready to offer him a €12 million-a-year contract.

Varane is completing a decade with Real Madrid this month, and during that period, he has gone on to establish himself as one of the best defenders of his generation. The French international has also already enjoyed quite an illustrious career, having won every single trophy at club level with Real Madrid while also lifting FIFA World Cup in 2018.

To date, Varane has amassed 360 appearances for Real Madrid, even chipping in with 17 goals and seven assists along the way. However, heading into the summer transfer window, his future is up in the air, as he seeks a new challenge in his career and is snubbing a new Real Madrid deal as a result. And, willing to offer him that next adventure are Manchester United.

Manchester United hold a long-standing interest in Varane, having previously attempted and failed to secure his services. That has not done anything to keep the Red Devils away, though, and this summer could well give them their best opportunity to snap up the 28-year-old, who can also offer them the best years of his career.

To swoop Varane away from Real Madrid, Manchester United seem to be pulling out all the stops as well. The report suggests that the English giants are prepared to offer the Frenchman an astonishing €12 million-a-year deal, which surpasses the contract offer from Los Blancos.

Indeed, Varane wants to pocket wages on a similar scale as David Alaba, Real Madrid’s first summer signing. However, amid a financial crunch, the Merengues are hesitant to offer him such a deal, which is why Manchester United’s €12 million-a-year offer could do the trick.

Having said that, there is also the small matter of the two clubs reaching an agreement over the transfer fee, which is where things could get complicated. Real Madrid want €70 million to part ways with Varane, and it will be interesting to see if Manchester United are ready to shell out such a sum on the contract rebel this summer. For now, United do seem to be closing in on Varane.
