Chelsea have reportedly submitted a proposal to try and secure the signing of Barcelona midfielder Miralem Pjanic, who has struggled in his debut season in La Liga.
According to a report from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Miralem Pjanic is unlikely to be a Barcelona player when the 2021/22 campaign rolls around, with the midfielder subject of an offer from Premier League bigwigs Chelsea as well as Paris Saint-Germain.
Pjanic arrived at Barcelona last summer from Italian giants Juventus in a move that saw Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo move the other way. The 31-year-old, since moving to Camp Nou, has endured a torrid ten-month period, having struggled to establish himself in the plans of manager Ronald Koeman in the recently-concluded 2020/21 campaign.
Indeed, Pjanic made just 30 appearances in his debut season for Barcelona, only 13 of which came from the start. The midfielder, who failed to contribute with a single goal or assist, was behind the likes of Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Riqui Puig, as well as breakout teenager Ilaix Moriba in the pecking order of things at Camp Nou.
Pjanic has grown frustrated with his situation with the Blaugrana and could be on his way out of the club should Koeman remain in charge. The 31-year-old already being offered to Barcelona’s rivals and newly-crowned La Liga champions Atletico Madrid. The Bosnian international, though, has also emerged as a subject of strong transfer interest from Chelsea, who are now said to have tabled an offer for him.
Chelsea, as things stand, don’t really need to replenish their options in the middle of the park, considering that Thomas Tuchel has the likes of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Billy Gilmour at his disposal already while the likes of Tiemoue Bakayoko and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, among others, will soon be returning from their loan spells away.
Having said that, it is no guarantee that the loanees would be a part of the team under the German tactician while Kante himself has endured some injury issues in recent times. So, bringing in a new central midfielder could perhaps work in favour of Tuchel and Chelsea, to which end, they have been credited with an interest in Declan Rice, while Pjanic has also emerged as a potential transfer target.
Now, it is being claimed that the west London giants have already submitted a proposal to Pjanic over a summer move, although they are set to face competition from French giants PSG. In addition, the 31-year-old is also being courted by Bayern Munich as well. Chelsea, though, might have an advantage as Barcelona are reportedly considering a swap deal involving Jorginho.
It remains to be seen whether there is any truth to these reports of Chelsea making an offer for Pjanic. However, what seems certain is that the Bosnian is likely to be on his way out of Barcelona in the upcoming transfer window.
