Chelsea and Manchester City are reportedly set to go head-to-head in the race to secure the signing of Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski.
According to a report from ESPN, Chelsea are poised for a transfer battle with Premier League rivals Manchester City for the signing of Bayern Munich’s prolific striker Robert Lewandowski in the summer transfer window.
Lewandowski has been one of the best strikers in the game for the most part of the last decade. Having first made his name with Borussia Dortmund, the Polish international took his game to a whole new level after switching to Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 2014. At the time of writing, the 32-year-old has plundered a whopping 291 goals from 327 appearances for Die Roten.
Lewandowski enjoyed a scintillating 2019/20 campaign during which he broke all kinds of records and has continued to do so this term as well, having already amassed a return of 46 goals and 8 assists from just 38 games in all competitions, in the process leading Bayern Munich to another Bundesliga title, while he is also closing in on Gerd Muller’s record of 40 league goals in a single season, having scored 39 currently.

Lewandowski’s records and accomplishments make him one of the greatest centre-forwards of the modern era. And it should not come as a surprise that the Poland captain is attracting interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, even though he will be turning 33 years old in a few months’ time.
Indeed, Lewandowski is on the radars of La Liga champions Real Madrid heading into the summer transfer window, while it now seems like Premier League bigwigs and this season’s UEFA Champions League finalists, Chelsea and Manchester City are set to battle it out with each other for the services of the Bayern Munich marksman.
Chelsea’s interest in Lewandowski stems from the fact that Timo Werner has endured a difficult initiation in England and has not been able to replicate his wondrous form from his RB Leipzig days. With both Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud expected to be on their way out at the end of the season, there will likely be room for a new striker at Stamford Bridge.
While the Blues have been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland as well as Inter Milan superstar Romelu Lukaku, Lewandowski, who could be available for €60 million, could be viewed as a cheaper and more experienced alternative for the duo while it also helps that Thomas Tuchel will have seen the striker from close quarters when his Dortmund side was being put to the sword by the Poland international.
However, Chelsea are now set to face competition from arch-rivals Manchester City, who are in the market to replace club legend Sergio Aguero. The veteran striker’s contract with the soon-to-be Premier League champions runs out at the end of the season post which he is set to depart, with a move to Barcelona being mooted.
Like Chelsea, Manchester City have also been linked with Haaland, but manager Pep Guardiola’s history with Lewandowski, given that the pair enjoyed great success together at Bayern Munich, could see the Sky Blues veer towards a move for the veteran striker. It now remains to be seen if either club acts on their interest in the 32-year-old or looks elsewhere to bolster their attack.
