Chelsea are reportedly interested in the services of Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski as they look to bolster their attacking unit in the summer.
According to a report from The Telegraph, Premier League heavyweights Chelsea are looking at Bayern Munich’s prolific goalscorer Robert Lewandowski as a potential transfer target ahead of the upcoming summer window.
Lewandowski is without a doubt one of the best centre-forwards of the current era. The 32-year-old has been plundering goals for fun throughout his stint in Germany, first with Borussia Dortmund and then with Bayern Munich. Till date, the Poland captain has amassed a whopping tally of 289 goals and 64 assists from 329 matches for Die Roten since joining them on a free transfer in the summer of 2014.
The 2020/21 campaign has been another fruitful one for Lewandowski as he has produced a stunning return of 43 goals and 8 assists from just 37 games in all competitions. The 32-year-old could also be set to break the 40-goal record in a single Bundesliga season set by the legendary Gerd Muller, having already managed 36 goals in 26 league outings.
Throughout his stint at Bayern, Lewandowski has been linked with other top clubs from across Europe but he has stayed put and continued in his merry goalscoring ways at the Allianz Arena. Heading into the next summer transfer window, it is Chelsea who have seemingly set their sights on the prolific striker as they look to bolster their attack.
Chelsea invested heavily in their attack last summer, recruiting the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech. But it’s safe to say that the gamble has failed to pay off. Werner has struggled to find the back of the net on a consistent basis, most recently missing a sitter in the UEFA Champions League semi-final tie against Real Madrid.
Havertz, who has been used as a centre-forward at times this term, has been a hit and miss as well. In addition to that, both Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud are staring at uncertain futures at as well. The former has fallen out of favour under Thomas Tuchel and is set to be sold for a transfer fee of around £40 million while the latter sees his contract expire at the end of the season.
So, bringing in a new and top-class goalscorer becomes very much important for Chelsea. A move for Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland has been mooted for some time now while there have also been reports that the Blues will look to re-sign former striker Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan as well. And now, it seems like Lewandowski, too, has emerged as a potential target for the club.
The 32-year-old is contracted with Bayern Munich till 2023 and it is unlikely that they would want to part ways with their ace goalscorer in a summer of transition when they are already losing experienced players like Jerome Boateng and David Alaba, while a new manager – Julian Nagelsmann – is also set to take over the reins at the club.
Furthermore, he would not be a long-term solution for Chelsea, given his age, and the club would be better served looking at other targets.
