Transfer News: Chelsea join Arsenal, Barcelona in Bryan Gil pursuit

Barcelona and Arsenal have reportedly been joined by Chelsea in the race to sign Bryan Gil from Sevilla this coming summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet El Gol Digital, the race to sign Bryan Gil continues to heat up with every passing day. Chelsea are the latest big-name club in pursuit of the 20-year-old Sevilla winger, who is also being tailed by Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Bryan Gil has become one of the hottest properties in Spain since breaking out at Sevilla over two years ago. The 20-year-old winger, though, has spent much of the last 18 months away from the Andalusian club, who first hauled him off on loan to Leganes in January 2020 before he joined SD Eibar on a season-long deal last summer.

The youngster has made quite an impression at the Ipurua, even though a return of 3 goals and as many assists in 23 appearances might not be too convincing. His exploits, though, earned Gil a maiden call-up to the Spanish national side last month before being handed his debut as well. At club level, the likes of Barcelona, Arsenal and lately, Chelsea have all been showing an interest.

At Barcelona, Ronald Koeman does seem to have a loaded attacking unit on the first look, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Francisco Trincao, Ansu Fati and Philippe Coutinho at his disposal. However, Messi, Griezmann and Coutinho all face uncertain futures at Camp Nou, putting the Blaugrana in a precarious position over the long-term state of the attacking unit.

To that end, the interest in Gil makes sense for Barcelona, who were recently joined by Arsenal in his pursuit. Speaking of the Gunners, it has been mooted that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be on his way out of the Emirates despite signing a new contract with the club less than a year ago.

With Willian, who is already on the wrong side of 30, failing to make an impact since arriving from Chelsea and Alexandre Lacazette also being linked with a possible summer exit – there has been supposed interest from Barcelona – it is not hard to see why Arsenal would want to bolster their attack by making a move for Gil this coming summer.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are the latest entrants in the race to sign the 20-year-old Spaniard, and for good reason. Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz were the big attacking arrivals at the west London club this past summer, but have all made slow starts to life at Stamford Bridge. In fact, Werner has been so poor that there have been suggestions that he could be sold this summer.

With that in mind, it does not hurt in pursuing a move for Gil, who currently has a €50 million exit clause in his deal with Sevilla. Los Nervionenses, though, are eager to treble his release clause as part of a new contract, which will take his valuation up to €150 million.

The report claims that Gil’s camp are open to the idea of penning a renewal and bump up his buyout clause, and with the player committed to Sevilla, his suitors might find it difficult to snap him up. The likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona also have Altetico Madrid for company in the race to sign Gil, but if his release clause is hiked to €150 million, a summer move will be unlikely.
