Chelsea are reportedly among the clubs to have tabled an offer to sign Manchester City’s departing forward Sergio Aguero this summer.

According to Foot Mercato, Sergio Aguero has already attracted a lot of interest from a host of clubs across Europe, shorly after confirming his departure from Manchester City at the end of the season. Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs to have expressed interest in the ageing forward, but face stiff competition from Chelsea.

In fact, both the clubs have already tabled an offer to Aguero to sign him in the upcoming summer transfer window. Chelsea’s interest, in particular, could give the Argentine a dilemma as it offers him the opportunity to remain in the Premier League rather than venturing abroad, with PSG and Inter Milan reportedly keen on him, while there have been links with Barcelona as well.

Since joining Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, Aguero has enjoyed monumental success in England, netting 181 league goals in just 271 matches. As such, he is widely considered as one of the best forwards to ever have played in the Premier League era.

For Manchester City, he has been more than a goalscorer, as the 32-year-old has been the central feature in the club’s renaissance over the past decade. His marvellous record in the front of goal also helped the Citizens four league titles as well as five league cups and one FA Cup.

Aguero has been involved in some famous moments as well, including the unforgettable last-minute goal against QPR to hand Manchester City the 2011/12 Premier League title. And it appears Chelsea have now identified the Argentine as an ideal replacement for another ageing striker in Olivier Giroud.

The Frenchman’s current contract at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of the season while there have been question marks over the temerity of big-money signing Timo Werner. The former Leipzig forward’s lack of productivity, in fact, has seen him linked with a shock away from West London, paving the way for Aguero to become a first-team regular at Chelsea.

Although the Blues are expected to venture the market for a new centre-forward this summer, with Erling Haaland pretty much on their wishlist, things could get difficult in the current financial climate. That is perhaps why Chelsea have been monitoring the situation of Aguero at Manchester City for quite some time now.

As such, a cost-effective option like Aguero, who has credentials of performing in the Premier League as well as the experience of playing at the highest level of football could be a smart option for Chelsea. The Manchester City star is also quite familiar with Thomas Tuchel’s usual possession-based approach, having played under Pep Guardiola for almost five years now.
