Chelsea are keeping a close eye on Manchester City star Sergio Aguero, whose contract at Etihad expires at the end of the season.

According to Daily Mail, Chelsea have entered the fray, in the pursuit of Sergio Aguero. The Manchester City attacker has attracted a host of suitors, especially with his expiring contract that should make him available as a free agent in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Aguero has been primarily linked with a move to FC Barcelona, with newly elected president Joan Laporta ready to ring in the changes and add more quality to the ranks. However, the Catalans are set to face stiff competition in the form of Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

The Blues, in particular, are a curious case given the fact that star players moving to direct Premier League rivals has become a rarity these days. That said, it was Chelsea who had made a sensational coup to sign Olivier Giroud from arch-rivals Arsenal a few years and their interest in Aguero is barely surprising, as the newly-appointed Thomas Tuchel hopes to retain the attacking depth in his side.

Giroud’s current contract at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of the campaign, meaning someone like Aguero should serve as a direct replacement for the Frenchman. They both boast outstanding scoring record in the Premier League, with the latter, in particular, often regarded as one of the most successful strikers to play in England during the 21st century.

Unlike Giroud, Aguero’s more technically and positionally astute style of play tune in better with Tuchel’s tactical philosophy. The Argentine international should thus not only offer additional depth in attack but might also turn into an upgrade over Tammy Abraham, albeit a short term one.

It is perhaps fair to consider that another Chelsea forward in Timo Werner is also facing an uncertain future at the club if recent reports are to be believed. Although the German has done a great job for himself, it appears a proper goalscorer like Aguero fits Tuchel’s agenda far better than a more counter-attack oriented Werner.

From Manchester City’s perspective, the departure of Aguero would certainly usher in the desire to splash the cash on a new centre forwards. Incidentally, the Citizens, along with Chelsea, are among the clubs who are still in contention to sign Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland in the summer.

As far as Aguero is concerned, he is keen on remaining in the Premier League even after his current spell at Manchester City comes to an end, thus floating the possibility of a potential move to Stamford Bridge. It could, in turn, derail Chelsea’s efforts to sign Haaland, so a lot could depend on how the club dictates its transfer policy in the upcoming summer transfer window.
