Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly interested in making a move for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, who is out of contract in the summer.

According to a report from the Mirror, Manchester City superstar Sergio Aguero, who is in the final six months of his current contract with the club, is attracting interest from European powerhouses Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

Having joined the Cityzens from Atletico Madrid in 2011, Aguero has grown into one of the greatest strikers to have played in the Premier League, playing a pivotal role in the success that the club has achieved over the past decade. In fact, the 32-year-old Argentine is also Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer.

However, over the past six months or so, Aguero has struggled with fitness problems, which has seen him slowly get marginalised in manager Pep Guardiola’s plans. Indeed, the former Atletico Madrid man has started just two Premier League matches so far this term. In all competitions, he has made just nine appearances, scoring two goals.

Despite his irregular availability, Manchester City have found a way to put together a 15-game unbeaten run in all competitions that has seen them move to the second spot in the Premier League and reach the finals of the Carabao Cup.

Aguero is in the final six months of his current contract with the Mancunian outfit. And the club hierarchy has informed the 32-year-old that he will need to prove his fitness before a call on a contract extension is taken. His potential availability on a free transfer in the summer has piqued the interest of Barcelona and PSG.

Barcelona are crying out loud for a new striker, having let go of Luis Suarez last summer. The Catalans have Martin Braithwaite as the only natural centre-forward within their ranks at the moment, who has blown hot and cold over the course of the season.

With the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Lionel Messi also going through ups and downs in their form, it is imperative that Barcelona bolster their attack imminently. They had been heavily linked with a move for Memphis Depay, but a move in January looks unlikely owing to the impending presidential elections at the club.

Given their sorry financial situation, a move for a proven goalscorer like Aguero, on a free transfer in the summer makes a lot of sense, although his wage demands could be a concern. More so, considering the fact that the City striker is a close friend of Messi and pairing them together could help them convince their captain to stay at the club.

However, Barcelona will have to battle with PSG, who are also intent on bringing in Aguero, with the aim of convincing Messi to make the jump to Paris as well. Interestingly, Manchester City, who themselves are interested in signing the Barcelona superstar when his deal expires in the summer, could look to extend Aguero’s stay at the Etihad for the same motivations.
