Transfer News: Chelsea move imminent for Thiago Silva

Chelsea are on the verge of completing yet another top defensive signing, with Thiago Silva expected to pen a deal on Thursday.

According to David Ornstein, Chelsea are on the brink of announcing their newest acquisition – Thiago Silva. The experienced centre-back has been scheduled to sign for the club on Thursday, with a medical also set to be completed within this week.

Silva is expected to sign a one-year contract, with Chelsea having the option to extend the deal for another year. He will become the second third defensive signing for the Blues, who had announced the arrival of Ben Chilwell yesterday and Malang Sarr, earlier today.

The Leicester City star signed a five-year contract, with the deal being worth around £50 million. He is expected to solve Frank Lampard’s problems at left-back, with both Marcos Alonso and Emerson failing to flourish under the Englishman.

In Silva, however, Chelsea will finally welcome the arrival of an experienced defensive leader, which is something they have lacked ever since the departure of John Terry and Gary Cahill.

Cesar Azpilicueta has done really well to minimise the club’s defensive frailties. But, it is Silva, who could offer the much-needed leadership and composure as Chelsea look to implement the attack-oriented game under Lampard with better balance in the team.

Silva has already played a key role behind the enormous rise of Paris Saint-Germain over the past decade or so. He was, in fact, a crucial member of the Thomas Tuchel’s troop that went on to reach the final of the UEFA Champions League – a club record.

The Brazilian’s partnership with Presnel Kimpembe and holding midfielder Marquinhos made PSG one of the best defensive sides not only in Ligue 1 but also in Europe.

Chelsea will be hoping for similar results from Silva at Stamford Bridge, although the change in culture, tactics and pace of the game could potentially make it difficult for the veteran to quickly settle into life in west London.

On the flip side, meanwhile, the arrival of Silva and Malang Sarr, may not bode well for some of Chelsea’s existing defenders. Fikayo Tomori has already been linked with a move elsewhere while Antonio Rudiger has also failed to return to shape following an injury-layoff.

Overall, it will be interesting to see how Lampard looks to reshape his defensive unit following the high-end acquisitions of Chilwell, Sarr and most likely, Silva as Chelsea brace themselves for the new era.
