Transfer Rumour: Chelsea reignite interest in Robin Gosens

Chelsea are reportedly once again looking at Atalanta star Robin Gosens as an ideal summer signing for left-back, should they fail in other pursuits.

According to The Sun, Chelsea are now being forced to go back to the drawing board in their hunt for a new left-back this summer. The Blues are reportedly set to reignite interest in Robin Gosens, with the Atalanta star seen as an ideal and cost-effective option to reinforce the left flank in defence.

Chelsea have had their sights set on a couple of targets for left-back for a fair while now. But, their pursuits of Ben Chilwell and Nicolas Tagliafico do not seem to be bearing any fruit, with other competitors causing a bit too much discomfort in their search for a quality first-choice left-back.

Robin Gosens has been part of an exciting Atalanta side that can be arguably labelled as one with the best and expansive brand of free-flowing football. The 26-year-old has been one of the proponents of the brand of football Atalanta have produced, with 9 goals and 8 assists in Serie A from the left side.

Although Gosens has been very dominating in attack, the scouts have had little to see in terms of his defensive acumen, with Gian Pero Gasperini deploying the German footballer in a more forward role on the left. This is where Chelsea’s interest in Gosens might actually be a cause for concern for their fans.

Marcos Alonso was brilliant initially, but the Spaniard has forever been seen as more of a liability than an asset in defence. In terms of venturing forward, there are few full-backs that would be considered better than the Chelsea star. But, his lack of composure in defence has also unfortunately been a highlight of his career at Stamford Bridge.

Naturally, with Frank Lampard unable to stop the leakage at the back, Chelsea would require a left-back with actual defensive skills and Gosens might just be a repeat of Alonso.

The Premier League giants should have no trouble in convincing the German full-back to join Chelsea, despite Atalanta’s growing stature in Europe, with Chelsea bringing in Timo Werner and favourites to land Kai Havertz as well.

Gosens will reportedly cost in the range of £27 million, which will save Chelsea a fortune compared to Chilwell, who is their primary target. But, Gosens is likely Chelsea’s last resort if they do not manage to land Chilwell and Tagliafico.
