Chelsea have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Kai Havertz, as the German has his heart set on a summer switch to Stamford Bridge.
According to a report from German publication Kicker, as relayed by The Sun, Bayer Leverkusen and Germany midfielder Kai Havertz has decided that he wants to join Premier League giants Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old Havertz has emerged as a target for a host of clubs across Europe after a stunning 2019/20 campaign with Leverkusen. The versatile attacking midfielder has racked up a return of 17 goals and 9 assists from 43 matches across all competitions this term, and could add to that once the Europa League resumes, provided he stays at the club.
Chelsea, who have already raided the Bundesliga for the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, have been hot on the trails of his international teammate, Havertz, for quite some time now. The Blues’ manager Frank Lampard has done a sterling job in his debut season at the helm of the club and is keen on building a team capable of challenging Liverpool and Manchester City.
With question marks over the future of Willian and Pedro, both of whom will be out of contract at the end of the season, strengthening the attacking department is very much the need of the hour for West London giants. Havertz, to that end, would be a great addition, given his ability to play on the right flank or in the No. 10 role, while he can do the job as a False Nine as well.
And now, as per the aforementioned report, Havertz, too, is intent on making the switch to Stamford Bridge. The 21-year-old has informed Leverkusen of his decision and a move could now go through smoothly, especially with Real Madrid likely to drop out of the chase.
The newly-crowned La Liga champions had emerged as suitors for Havertz. But, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has insisted that the club will not be making any big signings in the summer, leaving the field clear for Chelsea.
Bayer Leverkusen are demanding a transfer fee of £90 million for their prized asset. However, the German giants are open to receiving the payment in small installments, With the player keen on a switch, Chelsea extremely intent on signing him and Leverkusen open to a sale if their requirements are met, a deal now looks imminent.
