Transfer News: Chelsea lead Manchester United, Arsenal in Federico Bernardeschi chase

Federico Bernardeschi of Italy looks on prior to the international friendly match between Italy and France at Stadio San Nicola on September 1, 2016 in Bari, Italy.

Chelsea are reportedly the favourites to sign Federico Bernardeschi, who is also a summer target for Manchester United and Arsenal.

According to a report by Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea lead the race to sign Federico Bernardeschi in the summer transfer window. The Blues’ Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United are also weighing up a move for the 26-year-old, who is keen on making the switch to the Premier League.

Bernardeschi joined Juventus from Fiorentina in the summer of 2017. A promising youngster when he made the move to Turin, the Italian international was a regular for the Bianconeri in his first two seasons at the Allianz Stadium, which also made him a constant for his national side.

However, the arrival of Maurizio Sarri has halted the progress of the 26-year-old, who has started a mere 12 games this season. A return of 1 goal and 1 assist hardly helps his cause, but his status under Sarri seems to have forced Bernardeschi’s hand. The player is now ready to leave Juventus, with Premier League giants Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United monitoring his situation.

Chelsea are set to enter the market for a winger this summer, with Willian and Pedro expected to leave as free agents. Hakim Ziyech will arrive at Stamford Bridge soon but apart from him, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic are the only other wingers at Frank Lampard’s disposal. As a result, several wingers have been linked with the Blues, including Jesus Corona most recently.

A move for Bernardeschi, however, does make sense for Chelsea as well. Meanwhile, Manchester United should view the 26-year-old ought to be a backup, seeing as they are confident of snapping up Jadon Sancho this summer.

As for Arsenal, a big summer window beckons, amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Rafinha Alcantara is the latest option discussed by the north Londoners, but Bernardeschi would be a viable target as well. Having said that, it is Chelsea who are the favourites to sign the 26-year-old, as per the report.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Juventus’s interest in Jorginho seems to be a bargaining chip for Chelsea, who could sign Bernardeschi on the cheap, if they agree to part ways with Jorginho. Emerson Palmieri, another player liked with Juventus, could also hold the key in negotiations.

For Manchester United, Paul Pogba, who has been heavily linked with Juventus, is an option for them to engineer a deal for Bernardeschi, although such a transfer seems far-fetched. So, it looks like Chelsea could be the Premier League giants that prise Bernardeschi away from Juventus, with  United and Arsenal lagging behind.
