Ajax are reportedly set to demand £35 million in exchange for Andre Onana, who is the subject of interest from Chelsea over a summer move.
According to a report by Daily Telegraph, Chelsea will have to shell out £35 million in order to secure the services of Andre Onana. The Cameroonian goalkeeper, who could also be courted by PSG and Barcelona, is open to leaving Ajax in the summer transfer window.
Andre Onana has gone from strength to strength since joining Ajax from Barcelona in January 2015. The 24-year-old broke into the Dutch giants’ first-team at the onset of the 2016-17 season and has not looked back since, racking up 178 appearances for the club.
His stock, though, has spiked exponentially since last season, when he was one of the many pivotal players in Ajax’s shock run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Since then, he has been heavily linked with a number of top clubs across Europe, with Chelsea constantly in his pursuit, as per widespread reports.
Frank Lampard will have a difficult decision to make in the summer when it comes to the future of Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has not had the best of second seasons in Chelsea colours.
In fact, such was the Spaniard’s predicament for a while, that he was relegated to the bench for around a month before being restored to the role of first-choice goalkeeper just before footballing action was stopped due to the coronavirus outbreak. Kepa’s struggles, though, led to rumours of an impending summer exit from Chelsea.
The Blues, on the other hand, have reportedly been scouring the market for a possible replacement, with a number of goalkeepers, including Onana linked with them. It has also been reported that Onana favours a move to Chelsea this summer.
Chelsea, though, are not alone in pursuit of the 24-year-old, who has also been linked with Premier League rivals Tottenham apart from PSG and Barcelona. And, Chelsea and their competition now know how much they will have to pay to acquire the Cameroonian international.
Ajax have slapped a £35 million price tag on Onana, who is keeping his option open. The custodian has no qualms about leaving Ajax this summer, but could also stay put if is not presented with the right offer.
What now remains to be seen is if Chelsea will be prepared to meet Ajax’s £35 million valuation of the 24-year-old. If so, it will be interesting to see if they offer Onana better terms than the likes of PSG, Barcelona and others, as they look to sort out the goalkeeping conundrum this summer.
