Chelsea have reportedly opened contract talks with English midfielder Mason Mount, who is set to be offered a new five-year deal by the Blues.
According to a report by London Evening Standard, Chelsea have initiated contract talks with another one of their young English stars, as the Frank Lampard era looks set to begin. Mason Mount is poised to begin negotiations with the Premier League heavyweights over a new five-year contract.
Mason Mount has been regarded as one of the most promising products to have emerged out of the Chelsea academy in recent years. But, like many before him, the 20-year-old has become a part of the infamous loaning system at the West London club, having spent the last two seasons away from Stamford Bridge.
The young midfielder though, has impressed on each of his loan spells over the last couple of terms, having ended 2017-18 as Vitesse Arnhem’s Player of the Year before becoming a pivotal figure for Derby County last season. And, it is at Derby County that his talents truly came to the fore.
Having become the focal point of Frank Lampard’s side, Mount was instrumental to his side’s success, with 11 goals and 6 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions. The 20-year-old even earned his first call-up to the English national side and is now set to break into the Chelsea first-team setup.
With Frank Lampard returning to his old stomping ground, this time as the manager, it is expected that a few youngsters would get a look-in, contrary to what has been the case usually under the ownership of Roman Abramovich. And, Mount is likely to be one such youngster, who is now set for a new contract at Chelsea.
While Mount’s current deal has two years remaining on it, the Blues are eager to secure his long-term future, as per the report. To that end, Chelsea have opened talks with the 20-year-old and are set to offer him a new five-year deal that will run through to the summer of 2024.
The potential new deal will be a part of a series of renewals that Chelsea are handing out, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek also poised to sign bumper new contracts. As for Mount, he will continue negotiations over his deal once he returns from his holiday.
The decision to tie Mason Mount, and other young Englishmen to new contracts, is a step in the right direction for Chelsea, who are restricted by a two-window transfer ban. Tying players like Mount to a new deal could be as good as a new signing for the Blues and who knows, this might signal a reversal of an infamous trend at Stamford Bridge.
