Manchester United squad better than Liverpool’s, claims Jamie Carragher

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has claimed that Manchester United have a better squad than his former club, following their 1-1 draw with West Ham United

As reported by Daily Mirror, Jamie Carragher has said on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports that Manchester United have a better squad than Liverpool. Speaking in the aftermath of the Reds’ 1-1 draw against West Ham United on Monday, the former English international pointed towards the squad depth of the Premier League heavyweights to make his point.

Liverpool have enjoyed arguably their best Premier League campaign to date, up until this point, having been perched atop the table for large parts of the season. But, in recent weeks, the Reds seem to have tailed off to an extent, having failed to win three of their last five games in the English top flight.

The latest setback came in the form of a 1-1 draw against West Ham United, which has given Manchester City a chance to leapfrog them to the top of the Premier League table, should they manage to beat Everton on Wednesday night. And, Jamie Carragher has opined that the Reds’ squad is inferior to Manchester United’s.

Speaking on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports, the Liverpool legend alluded towards the depth in the respective squads at Anfield and Old Trafford, claiming that Manchester United trump the Reds on that aspect.

“I said yesterday Manchester United have a better squad than Liverpool. People may have thought it was a strange thing to say but I think we’re seeing little signs of it. On the right-back situation, Klopp’s made a mistake letting Clyne go. At the moment James Milner has played there twice now and watching him you can’t quite believe he played left back so well for so long. He looks like someone completely out of position.”

“Keita, who he paid big money for, looked quiet and keeps losing the ball. Firmino doesn’t look himself. Salah we didn’t see anything from tonight. I think that’s a worry going forward, not in terms of this pressure in the lead, more that when there’s a few injuries in different positions it doesn’t look like that solid Liverpool side we’ve seen for the last few weeks.”

Indeed, Liverpool’s decision to loan Nathaniel Clyne out to Bournemouth seems like a poor decision with both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez missing multiple games lately, with the backups proving to be poor options. Naby Keita, on the other hand, has struggled to adapt to life at Anfield since arriving from RB Leipzig last summer.

The same though, can be said about Manchester United’s summer arrival Fred, who has barely featured under two managers this season. While results have improved drastically under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the 1-0 win over Leicester City being the Red Devils’ ninth in 10 games overseen by the Norwegian, they still lag considerably behind Liverpool.

Options in attack do come in abundance for United. But, in other areas, it is arguable as to whether the Red Devils outweigh Liverpool, as far as quality of backups and the strength in depth is concerned. It can also be argued that an injury crisis is the primary reason for the drop in form, although the Merseyside club still remain in-charge of the title race.

For now, Jurgen Klopp will keen to get back to winning ways, which will help ease the nerves that have engulfed his squad lately. With several months left for the season to end, it is still anyone’s title to be won, and lifting the Premier League trophy would be the correct way for the manager and players to respond to Carragher’s comments.
