Manchester United have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Dutch starlet Steven Bergwijn, who is also a Tottenham target and will cost £25 million.

According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United have intensified their chase for PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn. The Red Devils though, face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, among others, in pursuit of the Dutch international, who has a £25 million price tag on his head.

Steven Bergwijn joined PSV Eindhoven from bitter rivals Ajax in 2011, before progressing through the ranks and establishing himself as a regular within the first-team setup. While 2018-19 is his third full season with the Dutch giants, it is only now that the player has been catapulted into prominence.

In 25 appearances across all competitions, the 21-year-old has an impressive record of 10 goals and 9 assists. And, his exploits with PSV have also helped Bergwijn earn his maiden call-up to the Dutch National Side, in addition to attracting the biggest of clubs across Europe. Manchester United and Tottenham are the most prominent names in his pursuit.

Under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, attack seems to be in safe hands, with Manchester United scoring 19 goals in the seven matches he has overseen. But, a few chinks remain in their armoury, particularly the right wing slot, where no player has been able to make a telling impact thus far.

Bergwijn is thus, a viable target, who has shown that he can play on either flank equally adeptly. But, Manchester United are not the only big name club eyeing a move for the 21-year-old anymore, with Tottenham also showing an interest in him.

The likes of Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela are able wingers in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad. But, with Christian Eriksen being heavily linked with a move away from the club, Tottenham seem to be in dire need of signing a player who can bolster the creativity.

While Bergwijn will not be a like-for-like replacement for the Danish international, he has shown that he can be as creative as he is destructive in front of goal. And, the fact that he only has a £25 million price tag on his head means neither Tottenham, nor Manchester United are likely to be fazed in his pursuit.

The two Premier League heavyweights also face stiff competition from the likes of Inter Milan, West Ham United, Bournemouth, Torino, Bordeaux, Real Sociedad and CSKA Moscow. But, Manchester United will fancy their chances of snapping him up, with the player believed to be keen on joining them.

For now, the Red Devils continue to monitor and scout Steven Bergwijn aggressively, although a move in the ongoing transfer window is highly unlikely to happen. It now remains to be seen if Manchester United indeed end up signing their target man, or if Tottenham, or another suitor, can swoop him away instead.
