Chelsea are plotting a shock swoop for Uruguayan international Edinson Cavani in January, as they look to solve their goal-scoring problems.
As per an exclusive report from Daily Express, Premier League giants Chelsea are contemplating over making a £50 million offer for Paris Saint-Germain’s goal machine Edinson Cavani in the ongoing transfer window, as they seek a solution for their woes in front of goal.
Chelsea have been struggling for goals this season, with their strikers Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud unable to deliver the goods on a consistent basis. So far in the 2018-19 Premier League campaign, the Blues have found the net on just 38 occasions – which is the least tally among the top six clubs in the country.
While Morata did score a brace in the Blues’ FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, the Spaniard has looked short of confidence for majority of the season and has been guilty of squandering a number of great goal-scoring opportunities.
Giroud adds value to the team with his ability to hold the ball and link up play in the attacking third, but the Frenchman too has been unable to find the back of the net regularly. In fact, the World Cup winner has netted just once in the Premier League this term.
This has forced manager Maurizio Sarri into using star man Eden Hazard in a false-nine role in recent matches, but the Italian is believed to be seeking a more permanent solution to the problem. To that end, the Blues had been linked with a move for Gonzalo Higuain, who had enjoyed great success under Sarri at Napoli.
However, they have decided to call off their pursuit of the Argentine, who is currently away on loan at AC Milan from Juventus. Instead, they seem to have cast their eyes towards PSG’s Cavani, if latest reports are to be believed.
The Uruguayan international is one of the most potent marksmen in the game currently and has been scoring goals in huge numbers at the topmost level for a considerable amount of time now. Since joining PSG from Napoli in 2013, Cavani has plundered 183 goals in 264 games and is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.
In the ongoing season, the striker, who will turn 32 next month, has found the back of the net on 13 occasions and has set up four more goals from 18 matches in all competitions.
Cavani has eighteen months left on his current contract with PSG and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid as well. While there have been no negotiations over a new deal yet, the striker is valued greatly by Les Parisiens and they would be reluctant to let go of him midway through the season.
But, Chelsea are hoping that an offer of £50 million will convince the French champions to part ways with their highest goal-getter before the end of the month. It remains to be seen, however, if the Blues’ pursuit of the Uruguayan bears any fruit or if they will be forced to look elsewhere to resolve their centre-forward problems.
