Bayern Munich will reportedly have to shell out £40 million in order to pry Callum Hudson-Odoi away from Chelsea in the January transfer window.

According to The Mirror, that Chelsea have finally revealed the expected sum they intend to rake in from the sale of Callum Hudson-Odoi. Bayern Munich had two bids rejected for the winger, who, according to the report, has been made available for £40 million by the Premier League giants.

There were rumours of Bayern Munich lodging a £13 million bid for Hudson-Odoi, which was swiftly rejected. Bayern then returned with a £20 million offer, this time confident of sealing the deal. But, the Blues knocked back the second bid as well and have now slapped a £40 million price tag on the academy graduate.

There might be a couple of reasons behind the increased price tag as earlier reports suggested that Hudson-Odoi could be sold for a much lower price. One major reason is the increasing interest in the English youngster, with RB Leipzig also entering the race for the explosive winger.

Another reason could be the potential to offset the rumoured £45 million deal between Chelsea and Dortmund regarding the transfer of Christian Pulisic.

There has been much furore over the aforementioned news, with fans not particularly happy over Chelsea sacrificing their own academy product to bring in a slightly more experienced product of another club. The fans had thought the Maurizio Sarri regime would be a turning point as far as chances to youngsters are concerned.

But, Chelsea’s stance on selling Hudson-Odoi and Sarri’s admission that the club is prioritising a winger in the market has quashed that hope.

What is particularly odd is that Bayern Munich are willing to take a gamble on the Chelsea ace, perhaps taking cue from the success that Serge Gnabry has had since leaving Arsenal and arriving in Bundesliga. The Bavarians are looking to build a future-safe wide attacking lineup, with the aim being to replace the ageing duo of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben.

So far, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman have impressed in spades. But, Niko Kovac would love more options available to him. Hudson-Odoi’s explosiveness could be related to how Arjen Robben was in the nascent years of his footballing career.

While Gnabry and Coman are expected to be higher up the pecking order, the Chelsea academy graduate along with Alphonso Davies could equip Kovac with some brilliant options.

It will be up to Bayern Munich whether they want to match the £40 million asking price. But, considering Callum Hudson-Odoi’s talent and hype at Chelsea, the price could be worth the gamble for the Bavarians.
