Cesar Azpilicueta has reached an agreement with Chelsea over a deal that will see him remain at Stamford Bridge till 2022, the club announced on Tuesday

Chelsea have made an official statement to announce that they have reached an agreement with Cesar Azpilicueta to extend his stay with the club. The Spanish international has signed a new four-year deal with the Blues that will see him remain at Stamford Bridge till June 30, 2022.

Azpilicueta has been a part of Chelsea since the summer of 2012, joining from Marseille as a promising defender. Over the last six years, the Spanish international has arguably delivered on the promise, and has in fact become one of the most reliable players in the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge.

During his six-year stay at the club, the 29-year-old has also showcased tremendous versatility, a quality that has made him an asset for Chelsea, having played in every position across the backline. And over the last couple of seasons, the player has even shouldered more responsibilities, donning the armband on a regular basis.

Furthermore, his standing at Stamford Bridge is truly indicative in the fact the Spanish international has missed just two Premier League games since the start of the 2015-16 season. His progress has been so remarkable that the £7 million fee that Chelsea paid to sign Azpilicueta now looks like a bargain.

The Spaniard’s position at the Bridge hasn’t always been stable, though. Azpilicueta has been linked with a move away from Chelsea a number of times previously, although the Blues have always managed to keep the suitors at an arm’s length.

But, the West Londoners have still been eager to renew terms with their most key players recently, having already agreed a bumper new deal with N’Golo Kante while also negotiating a new contract with Eden Hazard. Before the Belgian though, Azpilicueta has gone on to secure his future at the club.

Azpilicueta has signed a new four-year deal that will keep him at Chelsea well into his 30s. And, the Spanish international expressed his delight at putting pen to paper on the renewal while also hoping that the best is yet to come.

“I am really happy to extend my stay here at Chelsea. Since I came, I felt the joy and responsibility to play for this club, these fans, and every time I go on the pitch I try do my best. Hopefully there is a lot to come and we can keep Chelsea where it belongs.”

The renewal should put to bed the rumours of an impending move for a right-back, although it will be interesting to see if Chelsea continue to remain in pursuit of right-sided full-backs. As for Azpilicueta, the Spanish international is set to complete 300 appearances for the Blues and perhaps, even ten years at the club, if he sees out his new contract.
