Chelsea are reportedly hoping to sign former Liverpool playmaker Suso and have already established contact with the player’s agent.
As per a report from Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, Premier League heavyweights Chelsea are keen on signing former Liverpool flop and AC Milan superstar Suso and have taken the first steps towards signing him by making contact with his agent.
After moving to Anfield in 2010 at the age of 17, Suso made his debut for Liverpool two years later but failed to establish himself as a regular in the Reds first team under then manager Brenden Rodgers. Having spent a season away on loan at Almeria, the Spaniard moved to AC Milan in January 2015.
Things did not begin all too well for Suso in Italy and having failed to make much of an impact at San Siro, he was loaned out to Genoa in January 2016. However, in the past couple of seasons, the 24-year-old has managed to turn things around in a brilliant manner and has established himself as the fulcrum of Gennaro Gattuso’s side.
The AC Milan playmaker has started the 2018-19 season on an excellent note, already netting 4 goals and chalking up 7 assists in just ten Serie A outings, helping the Rossoneri to the fourth spot in the table. And his performances haven’t gone unnoticed, with Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri believed to be intent on signing him.
Chelsea have made an excellent start to the campaign and haven’t lost a single game in all competitions, after their FA Community Shield defeat against Manchester City. However, the Italian tactician wants to strengthen his squad further, especially in the wide areas, with both Pedro and Willian on the wrong side of thirties. To that end, he has identified Suso as his primary target.
Suso has four years left on his contract with AC Milan. However, the 24-year-old will be available for just €38 million, owing to a release clause in his contract. The clause expires in July next year and is valid only for foreign clubs.
Chelsea are hoping to capitalize on this situation by making a move for the AC Milan star in the January transfer window and are understood to have met with Suso’s agent Alessandro Lucci. However, the Blues will have to battle La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in order to land their target.
AC Milan sporting director Leonardo is hoping to hand the former Liverpool man a new contract, that would see his stay at San Siro extend till 2023 and increase the release clause fee significantly or completely do away with it. So, if Chelsea are to sign Suso on a cut-price deal, they will need to act swiftly, before the Rossoneri are able to agree new terms with their star.
