Manchester United are reportedly ready to bankroll a move for Jordi Alba, who has been told he will not be offered a new contract by Barcelona

According to a report by Talk Sport, Manchester United have been alerted to the possibility of signing Jordi Alba, who is an unhappy customer at Camp Nou. The Spanish international is in the midst of a contract dispute with Barcelona, who have informed him that he will not be offered a new deal.

Alba has been one of the cornerstones of the success that Barcelona have achieved since he joined the club in the summer of 2012. Over the last six years, his progress has been remarkable, with the Spanish international establishing himself as one of the best left-backs in the world.

But, while he remains a key player for Barcelona, Alba’s future at Camp Nou is highly uncertain with the Blaugrana not offering him a new contract, even though the player is eager to continue at the club. With less than two years remaining on his current deal, chances are the 29-year-old could be available, which has piqued the interest of Manchester United.

Manchester United, in fact, hold a long-standing interest in the Spaniard, having made advances to sign him on a number of occasions previously. But, the continued interest in the Barcelona contract rebel comes as a bit of a surprise, with Luke Shaw establishing himself as a key player in Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Manchester United though, seem to be in a precarious situation with respect to Shaw’s future, with reports suggesting that the Englishman is hesitant to commit his future to the Red Devils. If Shaw indeed refuses to put pen to paper on a new deal, the Premier League heavyweights could end up leaving on a free transfer next summer.

Alba is thus, a viable target for Manchester United to pursue, with the player possibly also becoming a mentor to Shaw, should the English international end up staying put at Old Trafford. Either way, the 29-year-old could potentially be an asset for the Red Devils, although they will likely need to table a colossal offer to prise him away from Barcelona.

Alba’s objective is still to remain at Barcelona, but their reluctance to offer a new deal to him puts him in a tough spot. It now remains to be seen if Manchester United have what it takes to land the superstar, or if a new contract is offered to him in the end.
