Manchester United are reportedly among the clubs that are monitoring the situation of Gary Cahill, who could be open to a January exit from Chelsea
According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United are keeping tabs on the situation of Gary Cahill, who has become a bit-part player at Chelsea. The English defender is set to assess his future at Stamford Bridge, with Championship sides Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday also eyeing a January move.
Cahill has enjoyed a stellar stint at Chelsea, winning every major trophy that domestic and European football have on offer. But, it has all been downhill for the 32-year-old over the last 12 months or so. He first lost his place as a regular in the first-team setup at Chelsea last season, before being a backup option for England at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Things have only gone from bad to worse in the initial stages of the 2017-18 season, with Cahill becoming a bit-part player under Maurizio Sarri, who considers him a backup option. With minutes hard to come by, the player is set to consider his future at Chelsea, which has piqued the interest of a number of clubs, including Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho is a huge fan of Cahill, who was a key player for the Manchester United boss during his second stint as the Chelsea boss. But, the interest from Manchester United comes as a bit of a surprise even though Mourinho is eager to bolster the central defensive unit.
The 32-year-old is evidently in the twilight of his career and will only be a short-term solution, if at all, considering he has already shown signs of age catching up to him. While it is true that Cahill could be the leader at the back that Mourinho has been yearning for, his inconsistencies could end up doing more harm than good at Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa are also interested in signing the Chelsea star, with the former looking at a sentimental move for the childhood Owls fan. But, Cahill intends to remain in the Premier League, meaning Manchester United will have the advantage if they indeed make a move for him.
A January exit from Chelsea does seem likely for Gary Cahill, should he continue to struggle for regular first-team minutes. It now remains to be seen if Manchester United end up swooping him away, or if some other suitor emerges in his pursuit.
